What could be worse than bats in the belfry? How about piranhas in the attic, those little things that eat at you.
Max Fagan is trapped in the self-defeating algorithmic processes of his daily life, influenced by his mental bully, Charley Axon and the negative thoughts and emotions swimming around in his mind called the attic piranhas.
When Max uses a top-secret relic left over from World War Two to achieve his desires, he gets what he wants—money and prestige inside the corporate world of the Elegant Watch Company, but it comes at the expense of everyone else. He quickly discovers a diabolical plot devised to cause the company, and the citizens of the city, to plummet into financial ruin. To foil the mastermind of the plan, Max coerces his best friend to take part in his unorthodox problem solving methods. As they attempt to reverse the resulting chaos, matters only get worse. Together, the unlikely pair of heroes attracts some bizarre characters who may be more than meets the eye. Max finally realizes the power to change things was within him all the time, and the resolution comes after the final showdown with Charley Axon.
If a fantasy/action novel had a funny bone, it would be The Attic Piranhas. It's a tale filled with nonstop adventure, humor, friendship, and love, shaken not stirred.

As the novel begins, protagonist Max Fagan appears as a goofy nebbish whose life is in freefall. Fired from his job, he is broke, facing eviction, wandering the streets of Camden, assailed by sage advice from a Chinese hot dog vendor named Wong and harangued by an ambiguous figure named Axon who may or may not be real. The title suggests a horror story, but Attic Piranhas is anything but. It is a quirky and very funny story of a few days in Max's life, with dreams, hallucinations, magic, and the contents of a junkyard included. It is up to the reader to decide how literally to take the various events described; this reader is still scratching his head, but with a smile.

After short-changing Max, Wong tells him, "Money no matter. Change matter," a self-serving but prophetic remark. Max's life changes for the better after buying a strange box in a bookstore with a hot check. This sounds like a tale from Twilight Zone. Such tales usually have a reckoning at the end, so you may wonder if Max will get his comeuppance. Wong would probably dodge this question with some clever fortune cookie quote. I'll simply pass.

Williams has a wild imagination and is a good story-teller. His book is filled with oddball characters like Wong who interact with Max in everyday situations that sparkle in the telling. He is a fine writer, with a crisp style, sharp powers of observation and description, and a wry sense of humor. A seriously funny book.

Highly recommended.

The Attic Piranhas edition by Marlin Williams Marlin Williams Sheila Williams Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Attic Piranhas is an excellent title for this book. It is a wild ride through the mind of an intellegent man who is living in desperation and depression. Yet this author manages to get him through his delusions and illusions while weaving an unusual tale that is hard to put aside. Mr. Williams' use of words is stimulating to the imagination beyond usual patterns. It's a good read.
A good writer keeps you guessing. Marlin Williams does just that. Throw an interesting character into a mess, add a twist, a couple of more interesting characters, and more twist and turns. A real page-turner.
Got off to a good start then went down hill. Very jerky narrative. Lots or predictable stupidity. Attempted slapstick didn't work very well. Read like an entry in an amateur writing competition.

Not worth the even the three bucks I paid for the edition. Now I know what cheap books are like.
Come along and join Max in his laughable adventures as he struggles with the voice ( Charley ) in his head. Max starts out as a lazy and unlikeable employee but goes through changes as he and his friend Ramir try to save the company from ruin. This is a light read that is perfect for a change of pace & a good laugh ! I recommend this book for everyone, no matter what genre they usually read. VERY ENTERTAINING !
Max Fagan is not your typical protagonist. He's overweight, losing his job, not very bright, and at first doesn't seem to have too many redeeming qualities.

However, this book is definitely worth reading. At the end of each chapter, I found myself automatically flipping to the next page in anticipation for whatever unfortunate occurrence that life will be sending Max's way. As a result, I finished this book in less than a day, and by the time I was finished, I was felt satisfied.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book and I look forward to reading something else by the same author.
I found this book by Marlin Williams one to really think about. Even though it's a wild and crazy roller coaster ride, I think we can all relate somewhat to the character, Max, in our lives; the craziness of what goes through our minds at times, although we don't act on them. Max, however, does. Along with his friend, Ramir, they find themselves in so many wierd situations and the decisions Max makes are less than the ideal, at first anyway. Williams has successfully created characters, especially Max, that are described in mannerisms to physical traits that you can actually "see" them. And what you see is anywhere from feeling sorry for Max to wanting to bop him over the head. I even found the minor characters eccentric in their own way which makes the plot more interesting. The story is hilarious, I had many, many LOL moments. The action is non-stop, so hold on to your hats for the ride. I would recommend this book to everyone who just wants a break from the somber world and who needs some laughter in their lives, and of course anyone else. Thumbs up, Williams!
The essence of "The Attic Piranhas" is similar to John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces". The humor is both weird and madcap, the protagonist charismatically unlikable (is that an oxymoron?), and both have hot dog vendors playing important roles. But The Attic Piranhas is shorter, its pacing faster, and Max has a few more redeeming qualities than Ignatius.

Marlin Williams recently finished a major revising/polishing of the novel, and it seems like the storyline is now more focused. Charley and the Attic Piranhas are portrayed with greater clarity, and the roles of Misters Wong and Sanderson now seem to fit more deftly into the plotline.

There's a nice moral to the story about the impact of negative thoughts and feelings; and the author manages to pull this off subtly and without sounding preachy. The ending closes out the story neatly. There's no booze, drugs, or adult situations to offend sensitive minds, and just a single cuss word near the beginning. So both YA and adult readers will enjoy this book.

Simply put, if you've read A Confederacy of Dunces and liked it, then you'll love The Attic Piranhas. If you haven't read ACOD, then if things like anti-heroes, crazy antics, karmic comeuppances, and a tinge of the paranormal appeal to your reading tastes; you will enjoy this book.
