A collection of poems about Life and love and some of the experiences that have made me the man I am today

What Makes Me Me? Christopher Gilmore 9781475195835 Books

...I just wanted to congratulate this young, enlisted soldier for having the courage to put his feelings and experiences to words. As a former Marine, it's my pleasure to support a fellow soldier in our mutual, self-publishing endeavors.

I bought his book, "What Makes Me, Me" and received it today. My favourite two poems from, "What Makes Me, Me?" are, "The Beast" and "Back to Reality".

"The Beast", refers to the conscious/unconscious states of being present/not-present with one's lover when in a relationship. The author is aware of the fact that he has these two sides, himself and the beast inside that sleeps. The beast only awakens when difficulties, perhaps the author own insecurities arise. This awareness shows the author is taking his first steps towards consciousness.

"Back to Reality" the author brings us into his own adult-once-childhood mind. In his mind, the author understands his words, his thoughts, his dreams. He is also aware of just how at odds his surroundings are with those words, thoughts and dreams. He defeatedly feels he must come, in the end, back to reality.

The author, Chris Gilmore is earnest and honest in his poetry writing. A good first attempt.

What Makes Me Me? Christopher Gilmore 9781475195835 Books Reviews

My admiration for this book of poetry by a young soldier that takes an honest look at life. He puts his thoughts into words that echo on, sharing his feelings about love and its complexities.
What i think of this? Well I personally find this all.. Wrong, and frankly the way you seem to think things are, isnt how things really are. I find this book to be a waste of my money. The poem about your father? Is completely wrong, he has tried to be a part of your life, and your mother wouldnt let him. So because she wouldnt allow him to be the father he really is and wanted to be, you now feel this way and the damage is done, but on that note here is what I have to say. You are no better then you say he is. Do you know what its like to grow up knowing you have syblings who dont seem to want anything to do with you? NO you dont, there have been many times in my life where I would have appreciated an older brother to help me and tell me how things are or whats the right thing to do, but NONE OF YOU WERE EVER THERE FOR ME. At least our father tried, and no matter how much you push him away and treat him like he never loved you, he would still love to be apart of your life and is proud of you and the things you have accomplished. Why I am not sure at this point since you dont deserve it. Thanks for Everything that you didnt do for me. Maybe one day ill understand why you abandoned me the way you did. But by then, the damage is done...

Immature, yes. He was 16 when this comment was written. Inappropriate place to write, yes again for sure it was. But he needed to say it. I am sure it made him feel better. You talk about someone not knowing both sides? I think that is more so on your part than his. If you really wanted both sides you could have gotten them anytime. As far as when he ran away, Josh did talk to Connor- I heard the whole conversation so again you are misinformed. If you ever want the other side of the story- (it is usually good to get both sides before you form an opinion), you know where we are.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book of poems by a young author. Many of them read like rap, with a catchy meter and consistent rhyme. The author has a good ear and a quick wit, and he addresses subjects of interest to young and old. I appreciated the humor in many of these poems.
The Cover for one, reminds me of a journey that the poet is about to embark on. And the poems did just that, a journey of truth that the world needs to see. Wonderful emotions of truth and a poet being who they are without fear from the world. Thank you for creating this book. Would had liked to see more poems for the poet.
I see in this book so many reflections of how I felt about love when I was younger - I think we've all been there, the aching over an unattainable love, the pain of a lost love, and the utter joy of finding someone who is your true love. This young man has collected so many of his thoughts into this volume, and many are thoughts I can also identify in my life. I particularly liked "Just a Friend", "When", "Back to Reality" and "Together, Forever, in Love". Beautiful and heartfelt, something with which we can all connect.
