A red light rotates on the ceiling and the back hatch of the cargo plane opens like a giant's mouth. Loadmaster Jim clips on a safety line and pushes the large capsule out the back hatch into the dark sky.
Joshua, an eight-year-old with terminal liver cancer, hears the plane roar over the hospital and looks out the window to see the large capsule fall from the plane into the dark woods. It is his first night at St. Wimple's. His roommate, Jane, puts on a hooded cloak with a sheathed dagger sewn inside. Jane disappears out into the hallway leaving Joshua with a rattling sound coming from the window. He thinks it's the bone fingers of the grim reaper. “Good evening Joshua, I've come to end the pain...just unlatch the window and let me in...” When Jane returns she explains very little except that “there's magic in the woods”.

Saint Wimple's is a compelling read -- not only for young readers but also for adults. The character development is strong -- you really get to know these kids and their adult comrades -- and the story line reveals enough to make you want to turn the page again and again.
I read it all the way through on a cross-country flight and didn't even care that I was squeezed in between two big, smelly guys because I was in a whole other world -- the world at Saint Wimples! Looking forward to the next in the series.
